Douling Village, located in Hedong District, Linyi City, is currently experiencing a lotus root harvest season. In recent years, Hedong District has been exploring the core value of its local characteristics and cultivating lotus flowers in a multi-dimensional manner. Established cooperatives include lotus root production, related tourism, and construction of lotus industrial chain, all bringing a revitalization of this rural area.
Douling Village has the advantage of enjoying a unique clay soil which is rich in humus, providing the necessary conditions for lotus growth. This advantage helps cultivate lotus which is more than 30 years now. Over 10,000 mu of lotus pond planting area is available, making it the fourth largest display base for lotus roots in the region. As a matter of fact, every household there has become lotus grower.
“We have established lotus root cooperatives since 2012, covering 6 villages. During the peak season, we would contact some vendors to purchase lotus roots in the fields. Over 100,000 kilograms of lotus roots can be sold per day, generating an income of 8,000 to 10,000 yuan per mu per household”, said Lin Qingru, chairman of Yuhu Lotus Root Planting Cooperative in Hedong District.
The largest lotus planting base in Bahu Town has 46 arched greenhouses and 70 mu of open-air cultivation ponds, introducing more than 100 varieties of lotus. In the first half of the year, it achieved an output value of 1.5 million yuan and provided over 30 employment opportunities in the surrounding area.
“Service-oriented, we have built 4 industrial roads with a total area of 4,800 square meters, highly improving the production conditions. Further efforts will be made to improve the agricultural infrastructure around the base.” said Xu Mingda, a government leader in Linyi’s Hedong District.
