Yangge is a form of folk dance, inheriting the ancient Chinese culture which involves the longing of the ordinary people for a better life. On March 1, the 23rd Yangge Folk Dance Show was held in Linyi’s Hedong District. Thousands of Yangge enthusiasts, in a purely festive mood of joy, gathered in Langya Old Town, singing and dancing to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
14 Yangge teams and more than 1,000 Yangge enthusiasts in the district came to the stage, dancing in light and joyful steps, accompanied by cheerful gongs and drums.
“Now that the ordinary people are enjoying better life, they’d like to express the love for their motherland through such performances. Wish you all the best in the Year of the Dragon!” Ms Zhu Mengling, a Yangge dancer, told the reporters.
The traditional “Shandong Da Yangge” followed its original movement in the pattern of three steps plus two shakes. The performance of “Dragon Lantern Carrying the Pavilion” and “Butterfly Capturing” are more complicated dances showcasing the national intangible cultural heritage. All in all, the positive spirit of the Hedong District locals was well expressed!
“Dragon Lantern Carrying the Pavilion” was in the past a ceremony to offer sacrifice for God of Rain. Now we are living in the wealthy new era, the show symbolizes the prosperity of the country and its people,” said Mr. Yang Guanqiu, the ninth -generation inheritor of the show troupe “Dragon Lantern Carrying the Pavilion”.
According to Ms Wang Yating, head of the Hedong District Culture and Art Museum, the district has held 23 Yangge performances so far. Folk dance Yangge has become an important cultural brand for the district, and a not-to-be-missed cultural activity during the Spring Festival in Hedong District.
